Decision-making for Treatment of 2-wall and 3-wall Intrabony Defect: When to Choose Guided Tissue Regeneration Alone or in Combination with Bone Graft
Main Article Content
Abstract
Regenerative periodontal surgery is a surgical procedure to correct 2-wall and 3-wall intrabony defect by regenerating periodontal tissue that have been lost in previous periodontal disease. This may be done with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) alone or in combination with bone graft in order to add the effect of the osteogenesis, osteoinductive or osteoconductive properties of bone graft to the regenerative outcome promoted by guided tissue regeneration alone. However, the treatment effect of regenerative periodontal surgery has a wide range because of the technique that requires a lot of clinical expertise and experience of the dentist. Therefore, patients selection and factors consideration are important in order for the treatment to be as successful as expected. This review article presents the decision-making process of regenerative periodontal surgery between guided tissue regeneration alone or in combination with bone graft from the patient selection, defect assessment, and treatment selection. This will enable dentists to plan the treatment for patients accurately.
