Abstract

Background: Currently, there is a new denture cleansing foam available on the market, offering a new option for denture wearers. This study was conducted to evaluate the stain removal efficacy and the effect on surface roughness of acrylic denture base of this cleansing foam.
Objective: To compare efficacy in coffee stain removal and surface roughness of acrylic specimens cleaned by tap water, dishwashing liquid, Polident, and FullSmile, in combination with brushing.
Methodology: 48 heat-cured acrylic specimens were prepared and divided into four groups. All specimens were immersed in coffee for 40 days. They were then cleaned by brushing with one of the following: tap water, dishwashing liquid, Polident, and FullSmile. Color measurements were taken before and after coffee immersion, and after cleaning using a spectrocolorimeter. △E1 (before and after coffee immersion) and △E2 (after coffee immersion and after cleaning) were calculated. Surface roughness was measured using a contact-type surface roughness tester before coffee immersion and after cleaning. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with p-value < 0.05.
Results: FullSmile showed the greatest color difference, followed by Polident, dishwashing liquid, and tap water, respectively. Statistically significant differences in color change were found among the groups, except between FullSmile and Polident. Regarding surface roughness, Polident demonstrated the highest surface roughness, followed by dishwashing liquid, tap water, and FullSmile, respectively. However, no statistically significant differences in surface roughness were observed between the groups.
Conclusion: Denture cleansing foam can be an option for cleaning acrylic dentures, with good stain removal efficacy and minimal effect on surface roughness.
