Predictive Factors for Shivering in Patients Undergoing Spinal Anesthesia in Sisaket Hospital: Retrospective case-control study
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Shivering is a multifactorial risk incidence that can be found frequently in anesthetized patients. The author needed to find out the minimal set of predictive factors for this incidence to prepare proper prevention.
Objective: To identify predictive factors for shivering in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia in Sisaket Hospital.
Methodology: This is a retrospective case-control study collecting data from anesthetic record form and recovery record from January 2023 – December 2023. As calculated from pilot study, the study recruited 570 cases and 570 controls. Descriptive statistics were presented by number, percent, mean and standard deviation. Inferential statistics were presented by independent t-test or chi square depend on data characteristics. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression were used for predictive factors analysis and presented by odd ratio and 95% CI. The factors with p-value < 0.05 were selected to be calculated for AuROC.
Results: This study found significant factors correlated to shivering are female, age ≤ 60 years old, underwent gynecology and urological surgery, operation time > 60 minutes (p-value = 0.049), blood loss > 150 ml, block level (>T10, p-value = 0.01) and receiving intravenous fluid > 500 ml (p-value < 0.01). After statistical analysis, all factors created AuROC at 65.5%. After selecting statistic and clinical important factors; age group, department of surgery and blood loss to calculate, the AuROC was 65.0%, comparable to calculation from multiple factors.
Conclusion: This study presented that age group ≤ 60 years old, undergoing gynecological, urological or orthopedics surgery and blood loss > 150 ml can be predictive factors for shivering after spinal anesthesia.
