Sinonasal Papilloma at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital: a 10 year review

Abstract

Background: Sinonasal Papilloma is an uncommon tumor of the nasal cavity. Although benign, it can invade adjacent structures and is associated with a high rate of recurrence. Delayed presentation is common among affected patients.
Objective: To study clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes and complications among sinonasal papilloma patients at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study enrolled patients diagnosed with sinonasal papilloma who have undergone surgery. The data was collected between October 2014 and September 2024.
Results: 116 patients were considered eligible for this study(Male 65.5%). The average age is 53.15±14.1 years. Most presenting symptom was unilateral nasal obstruction 84.5%. Inverted papilloma was the most finding cell type 88.8% in this study. The most common site of tumor origin was maxillary sinus (43.9%). The endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) was performed 69.8% and EEA combined external approach was performed 30.2%. There were reported synchronous malignancy 4 patients. Most patients did not have complication after surgery 93.1% The mean follow-up duration in this study was 19 months.
Conclusions: Sinonasal papilloma is the most commonly found in males over 40 years old. Inverted papilloma is the most common finding among the three histological types. The endoscopic endonasal approach is the standard to treat sinonasal papilloma. Due to high recurrent rate of this disease, postoperative follow up should be long-term.
