Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes patients with poor glycemic control have a higher prevalence of oral health issues, specifically dental caries and periodontitis, which can subsequently result in tooth loss.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an individual motivational interviewing program in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in Bandan hospital, 70 diabetes patients were included. Patients with type 2 diabetes were divided into two groups : one group received an individual motivational interviewing based oral health coaching program(intervention), while the other received conventional oral health education(control). Data were collected using questionnaires administered by dental hygienist, and oral health status was examined by dentists. Data collection was conducted over a period of 3 months, both before and after the intervention from 1st. October 2021 to 30th. June 2022. Participants were assessed at baseline and 3 months follow up for Plaque control, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic, Chi-square test, t-test, and McNemar test.

Results: When comparing the mean scores of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors before and after the intervention within each group, it was found that only the mean attitude score in the control group did not differ from the pre-intervention score. When comparing the differences in mean scores between the two groups, the intervention group showed statistically significant differences (p<0.05) in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Regarding oral health status, comparison of differences in plaque control by the O’Leary plaque index before and after participation in the program revealed that only the intervention group showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05).

Conclusions: The motivational interviewing program improved knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and plaque control in the type 2 diabetes.
