Prevalence and factor associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm in Si Sa Ket province

Abstract

Background: Abdominal aortic aneurysm is often asymptomatic in the early stage but is associated with high mortality after rupture. Ultrasound screening can detect aneurysmal disease before symptoms develop. However, data on its prevalence in Thailand, particularly at the provincial level, remain limited.


Objective: To determine the prevalence of aneurysmal disease among individuals aged 65 years or older in Si Sa Ket Province using ultrasound screening, and to explore factors potentially associated with aneurysm detection.


Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study collected data from an ultrasound screening program at Si Sa Ket Hospital between January 1 and December 31, 2025. Eligible participants were individuals aged 65 years or older who resided in Si Sa Ket Province. Categorical variables were summarized as frequencies and percentages, while continuous variables were reported as mean and standard deviation. Factors associated with aneurysm detection were analyzed using Fisher’s exact test, and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were reported.


Results: A total of 191 participants underwent screening, of whom 190 had complete data. The mean age was 71.6 ± 5.56 years. There were 94 men and 96 women. Aneurysmal disease was detected in 3 participants, giving an overall prevalence of 1.5%. Infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm was detected in 1 participant, and iliac artery aneurysm was detected in 2 participants. No factor was significantly associated with aneurysm detection.


Conclusions: The prevalence of aneurysmal disease detected through ultrasound screening among older adults in Si Sa Ket Province was relatively low. Nevertheless, ultrasound screening enabled detection of asymptomatic aneurysmal disease and may provide useful baseline data for developing local screening and surveillance strategies.
