Prevalence of High-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Infection and Abnormal Cervical Cytology among Women in Buri Ram Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Persistent infection with Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary risk factor for cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening using HPV DNA testing combined with cytology increases the sensitivity for detecting precancerous lesions.
Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of high-risk HPV infection and associated cervical cytological abnormalities among infected women.
Methods: This retrospective descriptive study was conducted using data from women who underwent cervical cancer screening with HPV DNA testing in Buri Ram province, Thailand, between January 1st, 2021, and December 31st, 2022. Cytological results and histopathological findings from colposcopic biopsy were also collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: A total of 24,708 women were screened, 1,477 (6.0%) tested positive for high-risk HPV. The most affected age group was 41–50 years (39.8%). Among HPV-positive cases, high-risk HPV non-16/18 genotypes were the most prevalent (71.5%). Cytological abnormalities were identified in 14.1% of women with high-risk HPV non-16/18 infection and colposcopic biopsy findings demonstrated precancerous lesions, including LSIL (4.2%) and HSIL (3.4%).
Conclusions: High-risk HPV non-16/18 genotypes were the most prevalent and were associated with both low-grade and high-grade precancerous lesions. These findings highlight the clinical significance of high-risk HPV non-16/18 infections in cervical cancer screening and management.
