Factors Related to Quality of Work Life among Nurses: A Systematic Review

Abstract

The purposes of this systematic review were to explore characteristics of studies focusing on factors related to quality of work life among nurses and summarize evidence-based knowledge derived from these studies. The eighteen research studies published during 2008-2018 in Thailand were selected from 45 studies. The data extraction form developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results were as follows: all research studies reviewed in this study reached  level 4 of the JBI. Most of the samples in the studies were professional nurses. Factors related to quality of work life among those nurses were personal factors including age, family status, income and working experience; personal trait factors including values, stress and burn-out from work; work factors including job characteristics, job motivation and job satisfaction; organizational factors including organizational atmosphere, working environment, organizational culture and organizational support; and management factors including participatory management, administration, and leadership of head nurses. The results of this document research could be used to improve the quality of work life among nurses through providing organization structures to promote good work, participatory management, adequate and fair compensation, transparent and verifiable evaluation, a safe workplace environment, and good working atmosphere.
