Impacts of climate change on health and care of older adults
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Climate change is a major global issue that significantly affects population health, particularly among older adults who are highly vulnerable due to comorbidities, reduced immunity, and socioeconomic limitations. These factors place them at greater risk of adverse health effects from climate change compared to younger populations.
Objective: The aim is to review the literature on the impacts of climate change on the health of older adults in physical, psychological, and social dimensions, and to propose appropriate strategies for care and adaptation for older adults and their caregivers.
Methods of study: This review article was conducted by searching international databases and relevant research studies on older adults and climate change and synthesizing the evidence systematically.
Results: Older adults are affected by climate change in multiple dimensions: 1) Physical health - Heat and cold waves increase the risk of cardiovascular and neurological diseases. Air pollution and PM 2.5 raise morbidity and mortality from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and are associated with cancer and dementia. Rising temperature and humidity promote the spread of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria. Natural disasters such as floods exacerbate outbreaks of waterborne diseases. Global warming undermines food security, making it difficult for older adults, particularly those with low income, to access safe and sufficient nutrition, leading to malnutrition and related complications; and 2) Mental health - Climate-related disasters and environmental uncertainty are linked to stress, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder among older adults. This review highlights key care implications, including risk stratification, enhancement of adaptive capacity, and the need for climate-resilient health and community care systems for older populations.
Conclusion: Older adults are significantly affected by climate change. Enhancing knowledge, preparedness, and adaptive capacity at individual, family, community, and governmental levels is essential to mitigate its impact and to promote quality of life in an aging society.
