A Comparative study of Quality of Life (QOL) and Mental Health of Caregiver with Cerebral Palsy Child with Healthy Control

Abstract
Background: Cerebral palsy is a chronic disease of pathologic brain. Caregivers of children with cerebral palsy should overcome the difficulties from their children’s impairments in which affect their quality of life including the risk stress and anxiety.
Objective: To compare the quality of life (QOL) and mental health (depression and anxiety) of caregivers whom responsible for cerebral palsy children and healthy control. The functional limitations of children with cerebral palsy which affected the quality of life and mental health (depression and anxiety) of caregivers were also evaluated.
Design: Comparative cross-sectional study
Setting: Developmental clinic, department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Surin hospital.
Subject: Experimental group was 28 caregivers of children with cerebral palsy and control group was 28 caregivers of normal children recruited for the study.
Methods: The questionnaires related to quality of life (WHOQOL-Bref-Thai) and mental health (Beck depression inventory and Beck anxiety inventory) were used for caregivers from both experimental and control groups were compared. The correlations between functional limitations of the children with cerebral palsy and quality of life, mental health (depression and anxiety) of their caregivers have been analyzed.
Results: Caregivers of cerebral palsy children had significant poorer quality of life (p<0.001) and depression (p=0.041) than those of control group. However there was no significant difference in level of anxiety between two groups. The functional limitations of the cerebral palsy child were not correlated with of quality of life and mental health (depression and anxiety) of caregivers.
Conclusion: Providing care to disable child interferes caregiver’s quality of life and mental health. The functional limitations of children with cerebral palsy were not correlated with quality of life and mental health of caregivers.
