Obstetric Complications of Teenage Pregnancy

Abstract
Background: Teenage pregnancy has been social and public health problems in Thailand especially in the present decade. The number of teenage pregnancy has been increasing in which contrast to those of developed country. Teenage pregnant has low ability to manage antenatal and child care consequently resulted in poor obstetric outcomes.
Objective: To determine obstetric outcomes of teenage pregnancy compared with pregnant women (20-25 years) at MaharatNakhonRatchasima Hospital.
Design: A retrospective descriptive study.
Setting: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, MaharatNakhonRatchasima Hospital.
Method: A retrospective study conducted at department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, MaharatNakhonRatchasima Hospital. The study group consisted of nulliparous and singleton teenage women (13 - 19 years) who gave birth at MaharatNakhonRatchasima Hospital during October 1st 2010 to September 30th 2011. The control group consisted of nulliparous and singleton pregnant women (20-25 years) who gave birth during the same period. Demographic data, obstetric and neonatal complications were collected and compared between two groups.
Results: The study group consisted of 1,042 women (accounted for 14.9% of total pregnancy) and the control group consisted of 1,425 women. The study group had more incomplete antenatal care than control group (16.0% vs 9.0%, p<0.001). The study group had higher preterm delivery rate than those of control group (22.1% vs 14.2%, pcO.OOl). Obstetric complications were also found higher in study group compared to control group in anemia (19.3% vs 9.0%, p<0.001) and low birth weight (18.0% vs 10.3%, p <0.001). Vaginal delivery was the major route of delivery in study group while rate of cesarean section was higher in control group.
Conclusion: The teenage pregnancy rate at MaharatNakhonRatchasima Hospital was 14.9 %. Obstetric and neonatal complications of teenage pregnancy were anemia, preterm delivery, low birth weight and birth asphyxia.
