Abstract

Introduction: Retinopathy of prematurity is the important complication in premature infants and caused childhood blindness.
Objective: To report the incidence and the need for treatment for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) at Buriram Hospital.
Study design: Retrospective descriptive study
Subjects: A total of 203 infants who was prone to occur ROP were examined between January 1st, 2006 through December 31st, 2006 in ROP screening clinic.
Method: Data from medical records were collected and analyzed by SPSS program.
Results: The incidence of ROP was 21.18% (43/203) for any stage and 8.37% (17/203) for stage 3 ROP or greater. The incidence of severe ROP requiring treatment was 3.94% (8/203). The mean gestational age (GA) of ROP infants was 30.16 weeks and the mean birth weight (BW) was 1,330 grams. The mean chronological age (CA) and postmenstrual age (PMA) at the time of first screening was 39.37 days and 35.69 weeks, respectively. The first identification of any ROP in this group was at a mean CA 42.44 days and PMA of 36.12 weeks. The mean CA and PMA of the first observation of ROP stage 3 were 52.53 days and 36.94 weeks. The mean CA and PMA at the time of treatmemt were 57.38 days and 36.88 weeks.
Conclusions: The incidence of ROP, 2006 in Buriram hospital was 21.18%. Incidence of treated ROP was 3.94%. Infants < 34 weeks of GA and/or infant with BW < 1,500 grams are at considerable risk for threshold ROP. We suggest that immaturity and low birth weight are both important etiological factors in the development of ROP. Prevention of prematurity is the promising factors that may reduce the incidence and severity of ROP in these high-risk infants.
