The Results of Cataract Surgery at Surin Hospital Campaign Celebrated on His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary (2007)

Abstract

Background: Cataract is the major cause of blindness in Thailand. Campaign initiated for cataract operation therefore organized in Surin province.
Objective: To study the result of cataract care and treatment at Surin Hospital in the year 2007.
Design: Descriptive study
Setting: Department of ophthalmology, Surin Hospital
Subject: All cataract patients who were operated in the year 2007 at Surin Hospital
Method: Data collected from operative cataract patient forms during, 1 January - 31 December 2007.
Result: There were 1,584 operated cataract patients. The study showed that the majority of preoperative visual acuity were in blinding level (86.93%). And post operative visual acuity after 1 month were in good level (45.58%) and in borderline level (50.38%). The other outcome of this campaign was decreasing average waiting time for cataract operation from 4.58 months to 0.46 month.
Conclusion: Cataract operation during year 2007 could control blinding cataract.
Most of patients had improved their visual acuity after the operation. Even though the number of cataract operation was effective to prevent incidence of blinding cataract, to control the prevalence of blinding cataract need more resources and proactive activities to cover all 3,428 cataract patients.
