Cold Knife Conization and Colposcopy for Abnormal Pap Smear

Abstract

Objective: To examine the final histologic findings as well as to correlate cytologic and histologic findings in patients who had abnormal Pap smear and underwent colposcopy followed by Cold Knife Conization (CKC).
Study design: Descriptive, retrospective study.
Material and Method: The medical records of patients with abnormal Pap smear who underwent Cold Knife Conization at Surin Hospital from 1 July 2004 to 30 June 2006 were reviewed. The author summarized the final CKC histologic findings in these patients.
Result: 53 patients who had colposcopy followed by Cold Knife Conization, 39 patients (73.5896) had a high-grade intraepithelial lesion or higher. There were 7 patients (13.2196) who had invasive squamous cell carcinoma. 5 patients with a low-grade intraepithelial lesion on Pap smear, 2 patients (4096) had a low-grade intraepithelial lesion, 3 patients (6096) had a high-grade intraepithelial lesion. 48 patients who had suspicious and high-grade intraepithelial lesion or higher, 36 patients (7596) had high-grade or more severe lesion on the final histologic diagnosis.
Conclusion: For patients with abnormal Pap smear, Colposcopy combined with Cold Knife Conization is an effective and useful procedure, especially in low resource setting
