Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) at Chaiyaphum Hospital

Abstract
Objective: To analyse the effective of loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) in patient with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia ( CIN ).
Design: Retrospective study
Methods: From 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2004, eighty-eight patients who had abnormal pap smear and confirmed diagnosis with colposcope direct biopsy were subject to LEEP. The procedure was undergone mainly under local anesthesia, medical records were reviewed for patient profiles. The indications for LEEP, pathological tissues were analysed.
Results: The median age of patient was 41.5 year (range 18-68). Carcinoma in situ accounted for the majority (51 cases, 58%), microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma in 2 patients (2.3%), 2 patients (2.3%) histopathological result were invasive squamous cell carcinoma and invasive adenocarcinoma in 1 patient (1.1%). They were refered to the tertiary hospital in the further management. Free resection margins of lesion in cervix were noted in 52 patients (59.1%), unfree margins were appeared in 36 patients (40.9%). From 22 cases of unfree magins of CIS who underwent hysterectomy, residual diseases were found in 9 cases (40.9%) of unfree surgical margins. No complication was seen in this study.
Conclusion: Loop electrosurgical excision procedure was effective and safe method for treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
