Prevalence and Factors Associated with Burnout Among Home-based Palliative Care Worker in Mueang Surin District

Abstract

Background: Burnout in palliative care workers is very important and increasing, however, there is no clear criteria for diagnosing burnout.
Objective: To study the prevalence and factors related to burnout among palliative care workers at home in Muang Surin District.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted, included all palliative care workers from 28 primary care units in Mueang Surin District. Instruments were used as the following: 1) answered questionnaires on general information data 2) answered questionnaires on palliative care environment factors assessment form 3) Maslach Burnout Invertory (MBI). Data. Analysis was conducted by descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean (standard deviation) and analytical statistics such as chi-square. The statistical significance was determined at p<0.05.
Results: A sample of 102 palliative care workers. Mostly, there were 81 (79.4%) females. The mean age was 42 years. There were 65 (63.7%) nurses. The prevalence of burnout was 61.8%. The prevalence of burnout in nurses were found 63.5 %, Public health academics 19%, Public health officers 9.5% and Physicians 7.9% respectively. Factors related to burnout were statistically significant: gender (p=0.042), education level (p=0.021), number of visits to patients requiring palliative care (p=0.035), responsibilities (p=0.015) professional perception of competence (p=0.015)
Conclusion: The study revealed that three five of palliative care workers have burnout. When bunout was classified into occupation group, nurses had the highest prevalence of burnout, followed by public health academics, public health officer and doctors respectively. Factors associated with burnout among palliative care workers were statistically significant: sex, education level, number of visits to patients requiring palliative care, responsibilities and professional perception of competence.
