High Quality Pap Smear Reduce Prevalence Rate of Malignant of Uterine Cervix in Surin Province During October 1, 2002 - September 30, 2006

Abstract
Objective: To determine the reduction of the prevalence rate of malignancy of uterine cervix in 15 to 74 - year - old women in Surin province by new innovation of Pap smear that send the slides in the bottles containing of 95% Ethyl Alcohol during October 1, 2002 - September 30, 2006.
Design: Retrospective study
Setting: Department of Pathology, Surin hospital.
Subject: A total of 15 to 74 - year - old women, who were checked up Pap smear in health service units including Surin Hospital, all community hospitals, all primary care units, private clinics and private hospital and Thai Red - cross unit during October 1, 2002 - September 30, 2006.
Results: All of 35,015 women in 2003, 27,350 women in 2004, 32,070 women in 2005, and 41,843 women in 2006, who checked up Pap smear including 15 to 74 - year - old women. Screening Pap smear revealed : Unsatisfactory result 2.32% (814 cases) in 2003, 0.50% (136 cases) in 2004, 0.80% (263 cases) in 2005, and 0.40% (169 cases) in 2006. respectively. Prevalence rate of premalignancy were 81.41/100,000 women (397 cases) in 2003, 167.25/100,000 women (823 cases) in 2004, 125.23/100,000 women (605 cases) in 2005 and 81.94/100,000 women (407 cases) in 2006 respectively. Prevalence rate of malignancy were 10.45/100,000 women (51 cases) in 2003, 3.86/100,000 women (19 cases) in 2004, 6.20/100,000 women (30 cases) in 2005 and 4.03/100,000 women (20 cases) in 2006 respectively.
Conclusion: New innovation of Pap smear that send slides in the bottles containing of 95% Ethyl Alcohol could reduced Unsatisfactory results from 2.23% in 2003 to 0.40% in 2006, in 4 years. Because the improved quality of slides and reduced prevalence rate of malignancy of uterine cervix from 10.45/100,000 women in 2003 to 4.03/100,000 women in 2006, because of high quality of Pap smear slides resulting in early defection of abnormal pap smear and the patients received early treatment before the malignancy of uterine cervix developed.
