Abstract

Objectives: 1) To develop a practical guideline for preventing needlestick injuries and exposures to secretion from intravenoustherapy, and 2) to evaluate the practicality of the devwloped guideline.


Materials and Methods: There were 2 stages in this research: (1) developing a practical guideline for preventing needlestick injuries and exposure to secretion from intravenoustherapy, and (2) evaluating the practicality of the developed guideline. The participants in the first stage were 18 nurses who were experts in intravenous therapy and infection control nursing. In the second stage, 77 participants were selected from nurses involved in intravenous therapy in Bangkok Metropolitan Administration General Hospital and Phramongkutklao Hospital.


Results: The research found that (1) the practice guideline to prevent needle stick injury, blood and body fluid exposure from intravenous therapy consist of 1.1) 4 structure-oriented  practice guideline 1.2) 4 process-oriented practice guideline, and 1.3) 2 result-oriented measurespractice guideline ; and (2) the developed practice guideline to prevent needle stick injury, blood and body fluid exposure from intravenous therapy was rated as highly practical in the evaluation.


Conclusions: There were 50 items in the developed practical guideline for preventing needlestick injuries and exposures to secretion from intravenoustherapy, and the guideline received high or highest ratings.
