Fear of Falling in Older Adults: Nursing Care with Health Belief Model’s Approach

Abstract

Fear of falling in older adults is defined as a low self-confidence of balance and movement which can lead to a lack of confidence to do activities. It is a common geriatric syndrome that make anxiety and avoids doing activities because of fear. Excessive fear of falling in older adults can lead to isolation, decrease relationships between each other and further lead to depression. Moreover, the fear of falling in older adults can lead to falling and loss of medical expenses after a subsequent fall. Nurses have a crucial role in assessing and reducing fear to prevent the effects of fear of falling. In this article, the author aims to present the seriously fear of falling problem and invite nursing care to prevent falling in older adults which effect of fear by approach on health belief model to reduce fear and promote older adults to change their behaviors to prevent falling.
