Effects of a Caregiver Empowerment Program on Knowledge, Attitudes, and Skills in Caring for Dependent Elderly in Chaiyaphum Province

This quasi-experimental research aimed to: 1) study the knowledge, attitudes, and skills in caring for dependent elderly in the experimental group between before and after participating in the caregiver empowerment program, 2) study the knowledge, attitudes, and skills in caring for dependent elderly in the control group before and after the program and 3) compare knowledge, attitudes, and skills in caring for dependent elderly between the experimental and control groups before and after participating the program. Samples consisted of 60 caregivers of dependent elderly from all districts of Chaiyaphum province, with 30 persons for each group, using purposive and simple random samplings. Research instruments were comprised of two sets: experimental tools and data collection tools. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, fisher’s exact tests, independent t-tests, Paired t-tests, and Shapiro-Wilk tests. Results showed that: 1) after the program, the experimental group had significantly better knowledge, attitudes, and skills in caring for dependent elderly, comparing to before the program (p<0.001); 2) after the program, the control group showed no difference in knowledge, attitudes, and skills in caring for dependent elderly, comparing to before the program; and 3) after the program, knowledge, attitudes, and skills in caring for dependent elderly among the experimental group were significantly better than those from the control group (p<0.001).
