Keywords:
Breast self-examination behavior, Health literacy, Working-aged womenAbstract
This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to examine breast self-examination (BSE) behaviors and to analyze relationships between personal and social factors and BSE practices among working-age women. Sample consisted of 418 women, aged 20-59 years, who resided in Warin Chamrap District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, selected through simple random sampling method. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire composed of three parts: 1) personal characteristics, 2) knowledge about breast cancer, and 3) breast self-examination behaviors. Reliability coefficient of the health literacy questionnaire was 0.84, and the reliability coefficient of the behavior questionnaire was 0.80.
The results revealed that most participants regularly performed BSE (54.3%), while 45.0 percent did so occasionally, and only 0.7 percent rarely performed it. Personal factors significantly associated with BSE behaviors were marital status, occupation and Health Literacy (p<0.05), whereas age, educational level, and family history of breast cancer showed no significant relationship.
The findings suggested that certain personal and social factors influence BSE practices among working-age women. Therefore, health promotion programs should emphasize enhancing social support and developing correct examination skills to increase regular BSE practices and reduce the long-term risk of breast cancer.
