Nurse’s Roles in Delaying the Progression of Diabetic Nephropathy in Patients with Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetic nephropathy in patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus is the condition that high glucose level in the body damages glomerulus causing the kidney to lose infiltrate function associated with decreasing in renal blood flow. These are the leading cause of the end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Factors related to diabetic nephropathy are associated with glycemic control, hypertension, duration that a person has been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, poor eating habits, incorrect drug use behaviors, smoking and alcohol drinking, obesity, and lack of exercises. Nurses’ roles to delay the progression of diabetic nephropathy in patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus are as follows: finding risk factors at the early stages, screenings and providing health education about the disease and conditions, providing prevention and treatments, promoting patients and family to realize the importance of self-care, including helping with the behavioral change that can prevent diabetic nephropathy, leading to clinical improvement and reducing the need for renal replacement therapy and ultimately improving quality of life of the patients.
