Abstract

This systematic review aimed to examine the characteristics of psychosocial interventions and synthesize their outcomes on autism symptoms among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Studies published between 2015 and 2025 were retrieved from PubMed, CINAHL Complete, ClinicalKey for Nursing, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) systematic review guidelines. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria. Data collection tools included research screening forms, critical appraisal forms, and data extraction forms. Data were analyzed using content analysis, frequency, and percentage.

The findings revealed that psychosocial interventions could be categorized into three main types: 1) family participation interventions, 2) social communication and social skills interventions, and 3) physical activity and creative-based interventions. Most programs shared similar processes, including pre-intervention assessment, implementation of intervention activities, and follow-up evaluation. Clinical outcomes consisted of primary and secondary outcomes. Primary outcomes included: 1) overall autism symptom severity, with six out of eight studies (75.00%) reporting statistically significant reductions; 2) social communication and social skills, with ten out of eleven studies (90.91%) demonstrating improvement; and
3) repetitive behaviors, with five out of six studies (83.33%) showing significant reductions. Secondary outcomes indicated improvements in parental stress, family quality of life, adaptive behavior, sleep, language development, and executive functioning. Therefore, psychosocial interventions appear to be effective in reducing autism symptoms among children with ASD. These findings may be applied to the development of nursing practice guidelines and autism care, with emphasis on family involvement and interventions implemented within real-life contexts.
