Abstract

This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationship between health literacy and medication adherence among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study included 310 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus receiving care at Akat Amnuai Hospital, Sakon Nakhon Province. The sample size was determined using G*Power version 3.1.9.2, and participants were selected by systematic random sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Health Literacy Questionnaire for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, and the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and Pearson's correlation coefficient.

Results showed that: 1) the mean health literacy score was 48.60±9.51, and the mean medication adherence score was 5.78±1.74; 2) Health literacy was positively correlated with medication adherence (r=0.355, p<0.001); 3) All six domains of health literacy were significantly associated with medication adherence, with decision-making demonstrating the strongest correlation (r=0.377, p<0.001), followed by self-management (r=0.360, p<0.001). These findings indicate that improving health literacy, particularly decision-making and self-management skills, may enhance medication adherence among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Therefore, healthcare providers should incorporate health literacy interventions into routine diabetes care to promote appropriate medication use and improve diabetes management.
